Can’t make it to E3? Find treasure in our Uncharted 2 Online Hunt!

Good Sunday evening to you!

As you’re reading this, your PlayStation.Blog team is currently neck deep in tamales at our E3 Meet-up. As attendees showed up, we not only invited the first 100 into our press conference, we also presented the first 200 with an Uncharted 2 Nathan Drake-style long-sleeve shirt, perfect for a half-tuck. While I’m sure we’re having a lot of fun (we’ll report back soon, with pics), we don’t want those of you who couldn’t make it to feel left out.

While we were planning this meetup, we decided to “over order” the schwag: extra Uncharted 2 beta codes, extra shirts, and of course, extra schwag bags. Whoops!

Here’s how we’re going to give them out to you, our dear readers:

Uncharted 2 Media Event Screen

On Friday (9am Pacific), we’re going to ask a question about Uncharted 2. Be one of the first 300 to answer it, and you win. Simple!

Actually, it’s not *that* simple - because that question isn’t really easy. So here’s what you’re going to want to do to have a chance: This Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9am we’ll be asking some easier-to-solve Uncharted questions via our Twitter account (you’re following us, right?), which will help you piece together that final answer.

More details below.

Contest Instructions:

  • Four clues will be given on the PlayStation Twitter from June 2 – 5 at 9 am PST.
  • The answers to the first three clues will contain the letters that make up the final word answer (kind of like the Jumble in the newspaper). We’ll use an asterisk (*) to indicate which letters will be in the final answer.
  • On Friday, June 5th at 9 am PST, we’ll ask the final question on the Blog/Twitter, the answer to which will be made of the letters you’ve collected up to that point. We’ll also provide the link to where you can submit your answer.
  • The first 300 qualifying people to submit the correct answer will receive an Uncharted 2 Beta Code… and the E3 Uncharted 2 Schwag Bag.

Giveaway Terms and Conditions:

  • Must be a US resident to participate, age 13 years or more.
  • Participants will not be told where to submit their answers until Friday, June 5th at 9:00 am PST.
  • Participants have the weekend (Friday, June 5 at 9:00 am PST - Monday, June 9 at 12:00 am PST) to submit the correct answer.

Read the Uncharted 2 @ E3 Contest OFFICIAL RULES

I know it’s not quite the same as being at E3, but between this and our coverage this week, you should be able to enjoy the week’s festivities without having to deal with LAX (this is a good thing).

PlayStation Around the Web: What We Read

With E3 on our doorstep, we won’t be doing our usual “This Week on PSB” post tomorrow morning (plus we’ve got a cool update hitting around that time, anyway). That said, here’s what you’ll see on PlayStation.Blog this week:

  • Meet-up Tonight! - For those of you planning on attending the event, make sure to get there early! Based on RSVPs, we’re already looking pretty packed, and you’ll want to try to win what we’re giving out!
  • E3 “The Home Game” - We know that as much as you’d all like to be at E3 this week, that’s just not realistic for most people. For those of you that can’t make it out to LA for the meet-up, we’ve set aside some cool schwag. How do you win it? We’ll tell you on the blog later tonight.
  • Press Conference Live coverage - We’ll be liveblogging the PlayStation press conference on Tuesday morning (11am Pacific), and follow that up with posts from some of the top brass here at SCEA.
  • After that? Lots and lots of posts and videos featuring the latest details on upcoming games and news from the show floor. You’ll definitely want to keep an eye on our Twitter account, as we’ll be posting bite-sized updates and pics throughout the week there as well.

I’m off to the airport now, but it’s going to be a very fun and exciting week… I hope you’ll be joining us!

Inside the inFAMOUS Music

I’ve been playing and writing music for most of my life. I started playing the drums at a very young age and, as a drummer, I think I had a natural aversion to ‘electronic’ music when I was first turned on to it. Then one day, about ten years ago, a friend played me a record called ‘Permutation’ by Amon Tobin and suddenly I could see the light (and hear it, for that matter). Years later, I had the opportunity to put together a bunch of music as a style guide for Sucker Punch’s new game, inFAMOUS. I did my duty as a loyal fan and peppered the style guide with some of Amon’s music, not because it would have worked in the game, but because I thought the folks making the game might have the same visceral reaction to his music that I always did. I never expected that it would actually lead to us working together.

inFAMOUS music 2 inFAMOUS music 1

Provided below is an interview we conducted with Amon Tobin regarding his involvement in the game. Check it out!

Q: What drew you to this particular project? How’d you get involved?

A. It was an opportunity to try something I’ve been wanting to do for some time, which was to make a musical score based on sound design. My last album “Foley Room” explored the use of foley recordings as the building blocks for rhythm and melody. This score took the marriage of music and sound design further still, using the environments and materials being interacted with in the game as the basis for the music itself.

Q. What was it like collaborating with other composers on the score? What was the collaboration process like?

A. It was an honor to have such a wealth of talent providing me with material to write with. Jonathan Mayer, Clint Bajakian and others all worked hard with me in the foley room to create unique percussive sounds that formed the basis of the music. Jonathan was like a machine constantly sending me new drums he’d laid down and we also benefited from the general enthusiasm of the people in the department who weren’t even supposed to be recording but who lent a hand. One of my favorite sessions was with Chuck Doud who spent a day with us recording these wicked bass lines which turned out to be extremely useful material to me. In addition I had these awe inspiring strings that Jim Dooley had written for the cinematics which I was given free reign to incorporate into my own arrangements. A highlight for me was working with Martin Tillman whose cello work inspired us all.

Q. What’s your favorite in-game track? Why?

A. There’s a track I submitted quite early on with the working title (“Nightcrawler”) which to me was very satisfying in the sense that it did what I set out to achieve. It had a balance of electronics and weird acoustic instruments that I felt worked. Later on there are whole sections of related music for gangs like the ‘Dustmen’ in the game which I really love.

Interested in learning more about the soundtrack? Take a look at Music4Games’ recent review, or better yet, experience it for yourself by downloading the soundtrack, available now on iTunes.

Bringing Comic Characters to Life in ‘The Punisher: No Mercy’

What’s up, True Believers? My name is Chris Baker. If you used to check out the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine (ca. 2000-2004), this probably isn’t the first time we’ve met. And if you were a regular reader, you might even remember that I was the one always writing about Marvel games. Well, now I actually work for Marvel, and instead of just writing about Marvel games (which definitely still happens on the Marvel games blog and on Twitter), I’m doing my part to help them get made.

The next Marvel game coming your way is Zen StudiosThe Punisher: No Mercy – and as you probably know, it’s a PSN exclusive…and it’s coming very soon. If you’ve been reading this blog over the past few months, you know the basics. But here’s something about the game you might not know…

As an arena-style first-person shooter built on the Unreal engine, No Mercy sports a lot of in-game taunts and other dialogue from all eight characters — close to 400 in total. Many of these lines were written exclusively for the game, but the rest? Well, one of the most important responsibilities we have here at Marvel is making sure our characters are, well, in character — and what better way to ensure this than to rip them straight from the comics?

So, that’s what we did. I can personally attest that work isn’t so bad when your job is to pour through hundreds of pages of comics.

Want some examples? Well, here you go. Just click on the images to hear the words on the page come to life — just like you’ll hear them in the game.

No Mercy sable-

A defining character line from Silver Sable (Ultimate Spider-Man #87).

No Mercy finn-

You’ll hear Finn Cooley tell you this if he kills you (Punisher MAX #12).

No Mercy jigsaw-

Jigsaw does his best Rambo imitation (The Punisher, Vol. 2 #38).

As if those lines weren’t enough, I challenged the guys at Zen Studios to create situational taunts. For example, if it’s the Punisher against Bushwacker, the guy with the skull on his chest has a thing or two he only tells the assassin with a gun-arm who used to be a priest. Something like this from War Journal #13:

No Mercy say your prayers

There’s all kinds of stuff like that.

I leave you with our favorite foul-mouthed Punisher enemy, Barracuda. In order to keep this a family blog entry, this panel from issue 34 in the MAX series is one of the few I can show you (it’s heavily cropped), and it’s attached to one of the few sound clips we can play for you.

No Mercy barracuda-

To answer your question…Yes, his teeth really do say that in the game.
