PAINalympics - Going for Gold

Hi folks, In May, we will be releasing the Sore Spots add-on for PAIN. Check out a preview:

Not only does Sore Spots continue the rich tradition of the silly fun that is PAIN, Sore Spots also includes a new multiplayer Mode that I’d like to introduce. It’s called “PAINalympics”, and it’s where two to four players can compete in the following events:

Horseshoes – There are four giant horseshoes floating in front of the launcher, and your task is to snatch them and try for a ringer. You have four launches.Whatcha gon’ do?

Bull Ride – Imagine a large group of mechanical bulls, each atop a large column. Launch, grab, and hold on to as many bulls as you can. Ready to ride, cowboys and cowgirls?

Rope Kick – Test your Ooching skills by launching and grabbing a rope that you have to hold onto and swing on, knocking down as many of the characters in the area as you can in 30 seconds.

Balloony Bin
– You have 45 seconds to push, pull, drag, or otherwise force balloons into trash bins. Extra points for the red ones!

Stack Whacker – All you have to do here is knock down a wall of boxes in as few launches as possible. If you’re good, you can probably use some exploding objects to help do the job more quickly.

Anvil Toss – Snatch an anvil out of the air and chuck it as far as you can. Watch out for the cherry bombs and exploding chemicals on the floor, though!

Relay Race – Keep your Pimp Slap Hand strong and smack, smack, smack your way to the finish line in the best time…and don’t forget the baby powder!

Punt Ball – Knocking a ball through a goal is sometimes a lot harder than it seems. Extra points if you hit the characters who are dancing between the goal posts.

Swing N’ Dunk – Grab the ring, swing, release…wait for it…wait for it…Oooch your character through the basketball hoop. Harder rings grant a higher reward.

Sore Spots is headed your way on Thursday, May 14th, and we’ll be releasing Ded Baron, a new launchable character, the following week. At the same time as Sore Spots, though, comes a little bonus – You’ll also be able to get a free download of another beloved PlayStation personality, which you may have just read about. He’s a little shy, but here’s a screenshot that will give you an idea of who we’re talking about.

See you in Sore Spots!

The Battlefield Like You Have Never Seen Before!

This is Gordon Van Dyke, Producer on the online multiplayer, first-person-shooter title, Battlefield 1943. This downloadable title for the PSN will take you back to the WWII Pacific Theater in a way never before seen, this June on the PLAYSTATION 3 for only $15! You’ll enjoy three amazing locations with Iwo Jima, Wake Island, and Guadalcanal letting you pilot and drive a variety of airplanes, tanks, and transport vehicles to help you win the battle.

Battlefield 1943

Today is a really exciting day, first it’s Walpurgis Night here in Sweden celebrating the start of summer’s approach with bonfires, yes I said bonfires, and this is done all over the country. It is quite the sight to see from atop the DICE studio. Another really exciting thing for me today is the release of the Battlefield 1943 trailer for the first time on PSN (later today) and seeing it in full glory on my PS3.

Now before you watch the video, imagine with me flying your Corsair airplane over the tropical Wake Island engaged in a dogfight with a Japanese Zero, you take him down and notice your squad mate’s tank about to be flanked by the enemy in another tank. You quickly bank to the left, swoop down, and drop two bombs perfectly on the enemy, saving your friend and helping him capture a critical control point.

Battlefield 1943 Battlefield 1943

After watching the video, I’m sure you will have a lot of questions about the game so instead of guessing, fire away! I’ll be around for as long as I can to answer them in the comment section. Thanks for taking the time to read this, now write your questions or just give a shout out! :-)

I can beat up Ashton, follow me on Twitter.

Soulcalibur Making Portable Debut on PSP

Soulcalibur Broken Destiny PSP screenshot

Big news, fighting fans. As you may have heard via GameSpot yesterday, Soulcalibur is officially coming to the PSP this summer. Called Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, this marks the series’ first foray into handheld consoles…and of course, what better place to debut than the PSP.

Yesterday, Namco Bandai invited us to San Francisco for the unveiling, where a demo of Broken Destiny proved that it is already looking graphically impressive on the PSP. While Namco is remaining relatively tight-lipped on specifics for the time being, I fired off a few questions to Director Noriyuki Hiyama (Unfortunately we were shooting in a loud room speaking through a translator, but I think you’ll get the point) about new characters, multiplayer and the possibility of secret content. Check out the vid for his responses. And drop us a note with your burning questions, as we’ll most likely be getting more time with the game/team at E3 in June!

PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe - The Biggest Version Yet is Portable

Phew… it’s a busy week… after teasing everyone about the new you-name-it PixelJunk game, it’s also time to release specific information about the new version of PixelJunk Monsters that we have prepared meticulously for the PSP. When I came up with the idea of having this on the PSP, there was some debate about whether or not people will be as receptive. So I’ll need your help to prove me right, please!

We pulled out all the stops and decided to make this the ultimate version of PJ Monsters, so we didn’t just add a new island, we’ve gone through and added new monsters, new towers, and a whole new island. On top of that we’ve added loads of goodies, concept art, and a bunch of new tunes and even some art videos from Otograph. We’ve basically gone and packed it with everything we could possibly think of, so we are calling the game PixelJunk Monsters DELUXE!

The original islands are also in there but they have been “remixed” to include the newer types of monsters and get you to use the newer towers. I’ll write another blog entry in a short while where I’ll go through the new towers and their abilities, but they are a lot of fun to use and add a whole new layer of strategy to the game.

Oh… on a final note, we’ll be supporting WiFi multiplayer, so you can play with other people on their PSPs. There are some cool ideas in this and a fun little icon language to let you talk to each other while playing but just this alone requires an entire blog entry so I’ll come back later with more details and pictures of how it will all work.

Thanks to all the PixelJunk fans for their support, it keeps us motivated!

The Latest inFAMOUS Video - “Power Trip”

Starting today, you’re going to start seeing a lot of stories on many of the games we showed off in LA and Seattle last week (such as MAG, Uncharted 2, White Knight Chronicles, the new PixelJunk, and of course, inFAMOUS). Over the course of the next week, we’ll be sharing news and videos of these games, and answering many of the questions you asked about them.

But first, now that we can actually share it, I wanted you to see this new inFAMOUS video, entitled “Power Trip.” I was pretty much floored by it when we first showed it to media members last week, and thought you might enjoy it as well:

Like I said, we didn’t forget to get your questions answered, look for those videos to come in the next few days. Oh, and because I’m pretty sure some of you will ask - that kick ass music track was created especially for inFAMOUS, by WORKING FOR A NUCLEAR FREE CITY.

Name the Next PixelJunk Game!

Big big news today! We are releasing the first screenshots and video of the next PixelJunk game! For those of you who have been following my page on Facebook which has been slowly teasing you since last week, this is the day you’ve all been waiting for!

And… to top it all we are also launching a naming competition! Yes, you heard it right, instead of choosing the name ourselves for PixelJunk 1-4 we would like YOU to name the game for us. This is for those real PixelJunk fans out there, because your name will go into the credits of the game and be immortalized for all eternity (or for a few years at least).

Anyway, first things first, go to the site and look at the concept art, watch the work-in-progress video, and think up a name: http://pixeljunk.jp/namingcontest

It’s looking pretty nice so far we think. We’ve implemented a fluid simulation sandbox with lots of different fluids and interactions and it’s simply a lot of fun to play just by itself, but on top of that we have a really cool “thrust” based game where you can shoot at monsters and carry stuff around to solve the puzzles in each area. The goal is to save the survivors, but what are they survivors of? As you delve deeper into the caverns you’ll learn more about what their predicament is - yes, this time there will be a bit of a story; which is a first in the PixelJunk series so far.

Oh, and we’ll give out free t-shirts to the winner of the naming contest and also to the five runners up, so definitely submit an idea no matter how silly you think it might be, we might just use it. We will pick the winner from a hat containing the names of all the people who submitted the same idea, so send your ideas in by May 11th, which is the closing date for the competition. We will then choose 5 runner up ideas and do the same thing for each one. We’ll then design a logo for the name and announce the winner a few weeks afterwards.

Good luck!

inFAMOUS - Trophies and Stunts

Hi all, I’m Chris Heidorn, Software Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions. With inFAMOUS shipping in less than a month, you guys are probably starting to wonder about what types of trophies and stunts (yes, there will be stunts) will be in the game. Well, I’m here today to give you a brief inFAMOUS trophy and stunt lowdown.

inFamous Hero screen

So, we know you all love stunts and so do we at Sucker Punch. The testing team here had the super fun job of coming up with some cool ways Cole could take down and kill enemies by doing a combination or sequence of events. To do this, the team relied upon their experiences playing the game everyday and noting where there were enemy setups and likely systemic behavior in the story missions and mini-missions that allowed them to pull off these cool stunts.

They created a list of 40 or more such combos, as we called them. We also enlisted the Sony test team for their list. Between the two teams we had a candidate list that totaled more than 80 stunts. To choose the best stunts for inFAMOUS, I created what I called an experience monitor. The experience monitor basically “listened” for raw attack events, such as an electromagnetic blast attack, and would record these events in a ring buffer. As enemies got damaged, the details of their damage would be associated with the raw attack event. In the end, we ended up with over 20 pretty cool stunts that we can’t wait for you guys to experience.

inFamous Hero screen

One of my favorite stunts is the environment kill. This involves making clever use of the environment to take down or kill enemies. If there’s a propane tank or a vehicle near some enemies, shoot at them until they blow up. If the blast takes down the enemy, you score this stunt. What’s fun about this is luring the enemies near the exploding device and using it to your advantage. What fun! You would think the enemies would catch on to this, but they just keep coming back for more! One of the harder stunts to pull off is the melee finisher. With this one, you must take down or kill at least 3 enemies in a row with Cole’s melee attack. You must do this quickly, since you only have ½ second between each kill in order for it to count.

So, for trophies, we have a number of different categories which are:

  • Game, story and mini-mission completion
  • Collect all dead drops and shards
  • Traversal
  • Stunts
  • Power-Based
  • Karmic decisions

The “Get Off My Cloud” trophy is probably one of the easiest trophies to unlock. The idea here is to use one of Cole’s powers to knock an enemy off a high location, such as a rooftop, and deal him damage that kills him when he hits the ground. Perform 100 of these and you unlock the trophy. Another fun trophy is the “Red Baron.” Blast enemies into the air and kill or take them down while they’re in-air. Do 100 of these and you’ve unlocked this trophy.

Anyway, we’ll leave the rest for you to uncover on your journey with Cole through Empire City. Enjoy and stay tuned for more inFAMOUS news!
